Event: You’ve Been Elected to Serve on A Board…Now What?
Speaker: Heather Witt, Vice President of Community Impact, United Way of the Piedmont; and Molly Moyer, Senior Director of Engagement, United Way of the Piedmont
Location: Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Community Room (189 W. Main Street, Spartanburg)
Session Description: Serving on a board for a nonprofit means more than showing up to meetings – it’s about using your skills and expertise to further the mission of the nonprofit you are serving. This special session will provide you an in-depth look at the role and responsibilities of a board member and how that fits into the overall operations of the nonprofit you serve. Whether you are an experienced board member, have just committed to serving on your first board, or are thinking about getting involved in board leadership, this session will provide you with the tools and resources to help you excel and stay actively engaged in the organization you are serving!

Event: “Speed Networking” – Become A Networked Leader
Location: Wild Wing Cafe, Second Floor (109 W. Main Street, Spartanburg)
Session Description: Are you looking for ways to get more involved in your community? During this unique event, you will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with local nonprofit representatives who are looking for individuals like you to serve on their nonprofit boards and committees, as well as enjoy a time of fellowship and connecting with other GLAA members. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to connect with some of Spartanburg County’s nonprofit organizations who are working to meet the pressing needs in our community!
Wednesday, June 22, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Event: Hunger, It’s in Our Community
Location: The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen (136 South Forest St, Spartanburg)
Session Description: Hunger is a very real issue that faces hundreds of people throughout Spartanburg County. Organizations such as the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen work every day to help meet this need by providing a warm meal to those in need. Learn more about this pressing issue of hunger and what is being done by one local nonprofit in a behind-the-scenes tour of the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen. Lunch will be provided. The Alumni Association will take up a special collection to help support the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen. Please come prepared to give back.
Thursday, October 20, 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Event: Opportunities Within – Tapping into your Fullest Potential
Speaker: Karen Knuckles, Co-owner of Express Employment Professionals
Location: Spartanburg Methodist College, Phyllis Buchheit Board Room (1000 Powell Mill Rd, Spartanburg)
Session Description: Do you want to take your leadership to the next level? Are you tapping into your fullest potential or are you holding something back? These events are open to all Grassroots Leadership Alumni and are FREE to all Grassroots Leadership Alumni Association members! A fee of $15 per event will be charged to Alumni who are not members of the Alumni Association. Become a member of the Grassroots Leadership Alumni today!
