Women Giving for Spartanburg – Frequently Asked Questions

2010 Membership Event at Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve

What is Women Giving for Spartanburg?
Women Giving for Spartanburg is a women’s giving circle founded in 2007 as a special project of The Spartanburg County Foundation.  Its mission is to maximize women’s leadership in philanthropy by engaging and informing its membership, increasing charitable contributions and significantly improving the greater Spartanburg community through the impact of collective giving.

Who leads this circle?
The circle is governed by an Executive Committee of women who are active, committed and experienced community leaders. Other committees include: Membership, Education, Special Events, Communications, and Grants Committee.  All members are encouraged to become as active in committee work as they wish.  To learn more about committee membership, please visit the Membership page of womengivingforspartanburg.org.

What must I do to become a member?
Traditional membership is open to all women who commit to give a tax-deductible gift of $1,100 per year for three years to Women Giving for Spartanburg ($1,000 to the pooled fund for community grants, and $100 for program costs such as events, mailings and membership recruitment). All members will receive one vote annually in determining the community organizations/projects to receive funding.

Junior memberships are available for women under the age of 35.  The annual dues for junior members is $550 ($500 to the pooled fund for community grants, and $50 for program costs such as events, mailings and membership recruitment).  Junior members will receive one half of a vote annually in determining the community organizations/projects to receive funding.

To become a member, you may fill out the online form and pay your annual dues by credit card through our Contribute Online option, or print your commitment card and mail along with your annual dues check to PO Box 2646, Spartanburg, SC  29304.

What is the deadline for annual dues?
Dues are due each year by December 31.

What areas of the community will Women Giving fund?
Through its grantmaking, Women Giving for Spartanburg will provide high impact grants to help address emerging issues and meet critical needs in the areas of Arts and Culture, Education, Environment, Health and Human services.  Women Giving for Spartanburg will hold several educational sessions each year to inform membership of needs and opportunities within each area.

How are nonprofits selected for funding?
Through a grants application process, the Grants Committee of Women Giving for Spartanburg will seek projects and programs meeting critical community needs in the five targeted areas of funding.  Through extensive research and due diligence, the committee will determine a slate of potential funding opportunities which will be voted upon by the membership.

When will the awards be announced?
Grants will be awarded at the Women Giving for Spartanburg Annual Luncheon each May.  Women Giving for Spartanburg members and the awarded organizations are invited to attend this event.

Who else has joined?
More than 240 women have joined Women Giving for Spartanburg to date.  View a member list: WGFS Membership List August 2016
