Women Giving for Spartanburg Honored
WGFS Award Received from Boys & Girls Clubs

Boys and Girls Club Honors WGFS  at their 2013 Afterschool Showcase

Women Giving for Spartanburg (WGFS) was honored Friday, May 17, 2013, by the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate at their 2013 Afterschool Showcase.  WGFS was presented with the Woman and Youth Award.

As said by Greg Tolbert, Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs, this event showed the fruits of WGFS’ generosity, spanning three grants and six years.

1) Six years ago WGFS funded Family PLUS.  We have sustained, evolved and expanded that program of parental involvement to all of our Clubs in Spartanburg and Gaffney.  The results will be celebrated at the event with Family PLUS representatives from each Club on stage to receive a reward for their hard works and contributions.   To date this school year = over 10,000 service hours and over $30,000 in contributions.

2) Last year’s grant to the Science Center fit within our science enrichment focus in many Clubs.  As a result PASS scores in Science soared for Club members.  Club members also participated in community science fairs placing in most cases.

3) This year’s grant will expand a successful collaboration with GOLs.  I visited the Three Sisters Garden with our Club kids a few times last year.  The transformation of that area by Wofford College and donors like Justin and Anna Converse is totally impressive.  The opportunities that come out of innovation and generosity are clearly seen in our collaboration with GOLS.  Thanks to Women Giving’s funding, the program will be expanded and hundreds of children will experience that place, learning about sustainable living, protecting the environment, and appreciating nature’s beauty.
