Grassroots Leadership Development Institute Application

The deadline to apply or to nominate an individual for The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Grassroots Leadership Development Institute 2014 session is Tuesday, November 19, 2013.

Each year, 28 community grassroots leaders are selected to participate in a seven month leadership training program, which is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skill-set, and resources to be effective in leading community improvement.  The annual, tuition-free program is for men and women who live, work, or volunteer in Spartanburg County.  Participants meet one Saturday a month from March to August, to take part in a hands-on curriculum which is designed to increase their ability to make a positive difference in their neighborhoods and in the greater Spartanburg community.  Course sessions will focus on topics such as developing leadership and organization skills, strengthening communication, leveraging community assets, and thinking strategically.

“The Grassroots Leadership Development Institute is a wonderful opportunity for individuals who are already rooted in their communities to gain additional skills that will assist them in being more effective leaders,” said Mary Thomas, chief operating officer of the Foundation.  “This learning experience empowers and encourages participants to seek out opportunities to make a positive difference throughout Spartanburg County.”   Since its inception in 2004, 226 individuals have graduated from the Institute and serve the community in various leadership roles.

For the past seven years, the City of Spartanburg has joined the Foundation as a sponsor by sending several of the City’s local neighborhood leaders through the Institute, thereby increasing their ability to bring about significant change in their neighborhoods.
