The Spartanburg County Foundation Awards Hub City Writers Project $3,400

The Spartanburg County Foundation awarded $9,600 in surprise grants to five Spartanburg County nonprofit organizations December 17, 2015, Just Because. This act of ambush philanthropy not only provides assistance to nonprofit organizations, but also brings awareness to needs in the greater Spartanburg Community. In the spirit of the holidays, many of the organizations received funding to aid those in need of rent and utilities assistance. Recipients of today’s Just Because grants are Greater Spartanburg Ministries, TOTAL Ministries, Helping Hands Ministries of Woodruff, Hub City Writers Project, and Teen Straight Talk.

“This is an opportunity for the Foundation to be able to surprise nonprofit organizations that are doing great work to help meet important needs in our community. It helps build awareness for these nonprofits so they may fulfill their missions. This is our way of giving back and making a difference during the holiday season,” said Troy Hanna, president and CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation.

  1. Greater Spartanburg Ministries received $3,000 to help provide rent assistance.
  2. TOTAL Ministries received $1,500 to help provide utilities assistance.
  3. Helping Hands Ministries of Woodruff received $1,200 to help provide rent and utilities assistance.
  4. Hub City Writers Project received $3,400 for Writer’s Well Youth Fellowship Retreat.
  5. Teen Straight Talk received $500 to provide a laptop computer.

The Just Because program began in 2014 as an opportunity to identify issues throughout Spartanburg County and to highlight nonprofit organizations that are working diligently to meet those needs. The Foundation leverages numerous avenues of resources in order to surprise nonprofit agencies with unrestricted, unsolicited, unbudgeted grant funds, bringing awareness to their mission county wide.

The Spartanburg County Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of Spartanburg County residents by promoting philanthropy, encouraging community engagement, and responding to community needs. This year, the Foundation has invested $9.7 million back into the community by awarding 1,850 grants.
