The Spartanburg County Foundation has received National Standards Accreditation renewal through the Community Foundations National Standards Board.
Why National Accreditation Matters: A Commitment to Excellence and Trust
When individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits choose to partner with a community foundation, they do so with confidence that their charitable investments will be managed responsibly and effectively. At Spartanburg County Foundation, that trust is at the heart of everything we do.
That’s why we maintain accreditation through the Community Foundations National Standards® program, the nation’s highest standard for philanthropic excellence. This accreditation demonstrates our commitment to legal, ethical, and effective practices that strengthen philanthropy and ensure accountability to the donors, nonprofits, and the entire Spartanburg County community.
What Is Community Foundations National Standards® Accreditation?

Community Foundations National Standards® program is the first and most comprehensive accreditation program for community foundations in the United States. To earn accreditation, community foundations must undergo a rigorous review process and document policies and practices related to donor services, investments, grantmaking, governance, administration, and financial stewardship.
According to the Council on Foundations, more than 900 community foundations operate in urban and rural areas across the United States. The Spartanburg County Foundation is proud to be among the more than 500 organizations that have earned accreditation, giving donors and their professional advisors confidence that accredited organizations meet the highest standards in the field.
Why Accreditation Matters for Donors
“The Accreditation Seal signals to donors and to their professional advisers that a community foundation is a sound place to give and make a difference.“

When donors establish charitable funds, they are entrusting a foundation to steward their gifts, honor their intentions, and maximize community impact. National Standards accreditation provides assurance that those responsibilities are being carried out with care and integrity.
“This is critically important to our fundholders and donors,” said Troy Hanna, President and CEO of Spartanburg County Foundation. “They are putting their trust in us every day to make wise investments and honor their wishes. There are 26 specific criteria we must meet to earn and maintain our accreditation. We are proud to meet those to provide confidence to the donors, fundholders, community groups, businesses, and nonprofit organizations we work with every day. “
Accreditation serves as an independent validation that Spartanburg County Foundation has the policies, practices, and oversight necessary to responsibly manage charitable resources for both current and future generations.
Strengthening Community Impact Through Effective Grantmaking
National Standards accreditation also reflects our commitment to thoughtful, transparent, and responsible grantmaking. For nonprofit organizations and community partners, it signifies that grant decisions are guided by sound practices and a focus on achieving meaningful outcomes.
“An open, competitive, and community-centered grantmaking process is a core element of National Standards,” said Ashley Whitt, Vice President of Grants and Community Impact. “As a community foundation, we implement a broad grantmaking framework that supports multiple grantees across a range of opportunities. Through grant information sessions, application review, and meetings with grantees, we help ensure that Spartanburg Community Fund resources are deployed to organizations making the greatest impact in our community.”
By following nationally recognized best practices, Spartanburg County Foundation ensures charitable dollars are invested where they can make the greatest difference in Spartanburg County, meeting today’s needs while strengthening the community for the future.
